MELI MAE
When she was 10 years old, Meli Mae had one goal and one goal only: To
play guitar and be as cool as her rock n roll brother. She idolized
her older bro and his band, so she enrolled herself for courses in
classical guitar. To her teacher's dismay, she never practiced,
instead choosing to mess around in her own rock-influenced way. At 11,
Meli began listening to her parents' jazz albums and discovered The
Beatles. This discovery was like a miracle to her, and she took on the
bass in her high school music class.
She chose the bass because:
a) It was the only string instrument the school had to offer
b) She wanted to rock out with the drums
When she was 12, Meli's brother bought her an electric bass and an amp
for Christmas, and this was the beginning of a new adventure for her:
Now she could play the bass away from school. She learned Henry
Rollins songs and got a huge crush on David Bowie and, by the age of
15, she formed a band with her friends in high school. She continues
to play with them today (when she's not touring with Creature, of
course). At 17 years old, Meli Mae got a blue Musicman and began
playing in bars before she was old enough to buy alcohol (Shhh! Don't
tell her mom!). In the years to come, Meli continued to play with
different bands, knowing full well that music was her passion in life.
When Creature asked her to join, she came into their jam space, and it
was love at first sound.
